Wanna be great English teachers? Here are some tips...

1. Learn to be confident, to stand in front of people -- such as a class -- and speak well. If you're shy, chances are you will be quiet and stutter when reading to the class. Or, if you're doing drama or role play you will find yourself being quite shy which will affect the pupils ability to do well.

2. Read regularly and find new words to expand your vocabulary. Read many kinds of literature including books, magazines, newspapers and poetry. This will really help you to be an English teacher because it stimulates the mind and lets you concentrate more.

3. Write a lot and practice your handwriting. A good teacher must have good handwriting or else pupils won't be able to read what you've written. Practice by writing letters to family and friends instead of email and texting on phones which take no skill.

4. Try not to text a lot. If you use text talk, you might find yourself writing things like: "4 ur hwk find 2 pics of sk8ters," instead use: For your homework, find two pictures of skaters.

5. When it comes to drama and role play encourage the pupils. If they are quite nervous, and you're talking to another teacher and not smiling at them or encouraging them -- they're going to perform badly and end up with a bad grade. If you keep smiling at them, they will feel more confident and will end up with a much better grade like an A+ or a 4.

6. Be strict but fair. Don't shout at the pupils every chance you get, but on the other hand don't let them walk over you. Show discipline, but don't go over the top, or this will make them behave worse towards you. If a pupil has done well, tell them so and reward them. Likewise if a pupil is struggling, tell him or her to stay behind so that you can help them to find out what's going wrong, or ask another pupil who understands the concept to help the struggling one.

7. Develop your English language skills including brilliant spelling, grammar and punctuation. You don't want to find yourself writing something on the board which the pupils are copying down that is wrong. Again, practice by writing letters to family and friends. Find out by searching the Internet where a colon and a semi-colon should be used, etc.

8. Don't speak and write too quickly. You may want to get the explanations and assignments made quickly as you have a lot to do to teach lessons, but if you speak and write quickly the pupils won't have time listen, to copy things down and might miss essential information.
